About Ryan:
‘I am a filmmaker and moving image artist working at the intersection between documentary, art, and media studies. Grounded in an analysis of aesthetics and politics, I am interested in how technology, culture, and political economy shape one another. The subjects of my work have ranged from the history of data centers, the financial industry’s collision with meme culture, the private art collection of the World Trade Organization, and the recent turn in Silicon Valley to so-called “hard tech.” For the past two years, I have been developing a body of work about the industrial processes behind semiconductor microchips and the massive epistemological and ecological ramifications of this tiny device. I have taught at the California Institute of the Arts, UCLA, and Syracuse University. My work has screened and exhibited at FIDMarseille, Transmediale Berlin, La Gaîté lyrique, the European Media Arts Festival, the UNCCC Conference for Climate and Journalism, and appeared in outlets such as e-flux, Duke University’s Boundary 2, The New York Times, and elsewhere.’
