Exchange
In the first year of the graduate programme (4th year) one can participate in an exchange programme with another art academy for one or two semesters.
The purpose of this exchange is that the student specialises in his/her own artistic field at another institution with special focus on that field and that the student at this stage of his/her artistic development meets new academic challenges and discussions, as well as extends his/her professional network.
The student in collaboration with the student advisor must plan the exchange well before the residency. The student must independently research the options and the advisor must approve the exchange.

Independent study outside DJK
In the first year of the graduate programme (4th year), as an alternative, the student can apply for independent study for 2 semesters.
The purpose is to give the student an opportunity to define a course of study outside the academy – as an alternative to exchange, because an art education should involve more possibilities than those defined by an art school. An independent study is based on an agreement between DJK and the student. The agreement means that the faculty approves a proposal by the student, wherein it is defined (1) which aspects of the student’s artistic work will be examined (2) which places, people etc. are involved, and (3) a time-frame for the project. This proposal must be received a month before the first semester of the 4th year begins, at the very latest. At the end of the independent study the student writes a report in which (1) the actual course is described and (2) the course’s content is compared to the proposal. This report must be submitted at the latest two months after the beginning of the first semester of the students 5th year. Furthermore, the student is encouraged to make a presentation for the other students at the academy. The student’s advisor must be involved in the proposal and report.
